The underlying chart is derived from a high-resolution mosaic of over 1300 images captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, taken with the Sun at an optimal angle to accentuate lunar surface features in remarkable detail. This provides users with an up-to-date, visually detailed reference for observing the Moon's surface.

Designed to accommodate both novice and experienced observers, the chart methodically identifies and labels major lunar features, including seas, craters, and mountain ranges on the near side of the Moon. It serves as a practical guide for planning and executing a successful night’s viewing session. Notable features of the application include:

• Optional display of the current Moon phase, highlighting the terminator—the boundary between lunar day and night—which is typically the most advantageous area for detailed observation.
• The ability to set the Moon phase for any specific date and time, with options to jump forward or backward by hours or days to facilitate future planning or review of past observations.
• Customization options to display the chart with either north or south oriented upwards.
• Mirror image option to reverse the chart view for convenience based on observing setup.
• Red filter mode to simulate eye protection and enhance contrast during lunar viewing.
• Toggle options to hide or display labels for lunar seas and craters.
• Display of grid lines and coordinates for precise location referencing.
• An index of numbered craters that allows users to tap and directly navigate to detailed labels on the chart.
• Initial screen configuration displaying only sea names; as users zoom in, crater names gradually appear to support detailed study.
